It is situated in the Shiwalik Hills on the lower range of the Himalaya, at an average elevation of 6,982 ft (2,128 m) .It is popularly known as the “ Queen of Hills “.The backbone of Darjeeling's economy are Tourism and the Tea industry. The Mall :- The Mall is Darjeeling's popular commercial street.. From here one can purchase the Buddhist and Tibetan artifacts, paintings, dresses, antiques etc. The Mall leads to Chaurasta, a square, which doubles as a bandstand, a pony riding arena for children and a haven for lovers.
Chowrasta:- Chowrasta means a crossroad .It is famous for its commercial activities and well clustered with hotels, restaurants and shops which attracts every visitor on the tour to Darjeeling. It is famous for its display of Woolen garments, tribal ornaments, Thankas, rosaries, brass statuettes and Gorkha daggers. One can also enjoy a pony ride form this place.
Tiger Hill:- Tiger Hill is located at an altitude of 8,482 feet above sea level and is about 13 km away from the Darjeeling town. It acclaimed its international fame for providing a magnificent view of sunrise and sunset.
Observatory Hills: – It provides one of the overwhelming views of Kanchenjunga peaks and is locally known as “Makal-Babu-Ko-Thaan “ There is temple located at this place which is very famous among Buddhists and Hindus .
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute: This institute was established by late Tenzing Norgay, and Sir Edmund Hillary on 29 May 1953 .A number of mountaineering courses are conducted here for aspiring mountaineers coming from all over the world. Main attraction of this institute is the display of those items, which were used by them to climb Mount Everest.
How to reach there:-
By Air :- Bagdogra is the nearest airport to the Darjeeling which is an important military installation and about 94-96 km away from Darjeeling. Various domestic flights shuttle between Bagdogra to major cities in India such as Delhi, Calcutta and Guwahati. People who are willing to travel by air can land at the Bagdogra airport and there are various means of transport s available such as buses, taxis and private cars from the airport for reaching Darjeeling. Or one can reach Siliguri and can avail various transport facilities.
By Train :- The most convenient railhead for Darjeeling is New Jalpaiguri / Siliguri. Various cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati, Allahabad, Kanpur, Bangalore and Patna etc. are connected to the New Jalpaiguri / Siliguri station by major trains. But only the toy-train shuttles between the local Darjeeling and the New Jalpaiguri / Siliguri station. So if you plan your journey by train, you have to board the toy-train from the New Jalpaiguri/ Siliguri station for getting to the place. The journey takes about 10 hrs and gives you a breathtaking view of the entire landscape. Toy train of Darjeeling has been included in the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
By Road :- Darjeeling has a good network of motorable roads, which connects Darjeeling to the other places in and around the West Bengal. The state transports is well sufficed with regular bus service that piles between Darjeeling to the nearby cities like Siliguri, Bagdogra, Gangtok, Kurseong and Kathmandu . Whether in a car or bus, or just driving on your own the experience is in comparable on Drjeeling roads . It is just Pleasing and Serene!
