Amarnath Yatra
The holyshrine of Amarnath is located 145 km east of Srinagar . It is famous because of ice Silva-linga, that changes size with the seasons and moon and it becomes bigger and smaller. On the full moon day the height of linga reached about 6 ft .The annual holy yatra of Amarnath cave situated at 14000ft above the sea level started in the months of sharavan (July/August) which is organized by the State Government. The pilgrims are allowed to perform darshan from Ashard Purnimashi to Shravan Purnimashi The yatris need to register themselves prior to the yatra with the local state government of Jammu and Kashmir . The yatris could do this registration through J&K state tourism office in the major cities. The yatra is conducted from the longer and traditional path from Srinagar and a smaller route from Baltal. All the needed information regarding this yatra is publicized by the Tourism Department in leading as well as local news papers. For Amarnath Yatra there is 42 km pilgrimage on foot from the town of Pahalgam, and about 96 km from Srinagar, and the whole journey is covered in four to five days. Now a day Choppers are easily available to reach the holy shrine from both Srinagar and Baltal. How to reach
Air: The nearest aerodrome to reach is Srinagar. There are daily flights to Srinagar from Delhi and Jammu.
Besides this there are some week days flights are also available from to pick up the passengers from Chandigarh and Amritsar .
Rail: Jammu is the nearest Railway Station. It is well connected with other stations of India.
Road: During this yatra special bus service is provided by different state govts. to reach Jammu such as Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal .Private Buses and Taxies are also available for this part of the journey or these can be hired on daily as well as full tour basis.
