Background:
An amalgamated Thai kingdom was set up in the mid-14th century known as the Siam until 1939; Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by European power. A deadly rebellion in 1932 led to a legitimate monarchy. Currently the country has met with nationalist violence in its southern ethnic Malay-Muslim provinces. Thus, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict, after alliance with Japan during World War II.
